Haworth Happenings – Summer Camp

January, 2009

Dear Praying Friends,
The high point of a very busy January was our children’s camp for ages 9 – 13.  We built the Esperança church with lots of hammock hooks.  Classrooms and the church auditorium are used to hang hammocks and sleep the children.

Meetings took place in the open air social hall.  The four buildings of the campus enclose a central green area ringed by trees.  Grass is a rarity here and the children love to play volley ball and soccer on it.

There is a small pool with about 2 ½ feet of water.  We turned the pump on and filled it.  Then everybody played in the water with their team:  red, green, blue or yellow.  At 5:00 p.m. we pulled the plug and all the water drained out.

Everything was awarded by points… memory work, good behavior, sports competitions.  Being disruptive took off points for their team.  This did not go over well with team mates.  All the workers were volunteers; and all the food and expenses were covered by donations.

Our goal was to bring in unsaved kids and evangelize them in 2 ½ days.  We used Bible stories, missionary stories, five memory verses, preaching  and videos to present the gospel.

Camp capacity is one hundred children.  This year 143 boys showed up.  They caught us unprepared and the first day was rough.  Almost from the beginning they started going home either homesick or not submissive.  We closed camp with over 60 and 11 boys prayed to receive Christ as Savior.  The girls were much easier, and only 93 came.  We still lost some, but 13 girls prayed to receive Christ.

Several of you gave generous gifts in December and we are now car shopping for something  bigger, more reliable and more comfortable.

Thank you for your prayers, contributions, love and interest.  May God bless you!
